How plants work
Plants run on some of the most elegant biology on the planet. These notes explain the everyday processes that keep a plant alive, from how a leaf turns sunlight into sugar to how a root knows which way is down. Every note starts with a short answer, then goes as deep as you want to go.
Why do roots always grow down?
Roots grow down because cells in the root tip hold heavy starch grains that sink towards whichever side is down.
How does photosynthesis work?
Photosynthesis is how plants turn light into food. Leaves capture sunlight with chlorophyll, use that energy to split water, and build sugar out of carbon dioxide from the air.
