Portrait of Yumna Ahmad framed by drawings of plants

Hi, I’m Yumna

I’m a plant scientist, a researcher at heart and the kind of plant lover who reads journal papers for fun. Plant Decoded is where I share what I find.

I started it because the most fascinating stories in biology were stuck in places most people never look. Research papers are accurate but hard going. Social media is fun but often wrong. I wanted something in between: real science, explained the way you’d explain it to a curious friend.

My background

Trained in plant science

I hold an MPhil in Plant Molecular Biology, completed with distinction, so I know how plants work right down to their genes.

A published researcher

I’ve published several research papers, including first-author work, so I know what good evidence looks like and where studies get stretched.

A writer for years

I’ve spent almost six years writing for clients around the world, turning complicated subjects into things people actually want to read.

How every field note is made

  1. Start from the research

Every note begins with the original studies, not press releases or other blogs.

  2. Check it against the field

One study is a data point. I look for what agrees, what disagrees and what’s been repeated.

  3. Answer first, then explain

You get a short answer at the top, the full story next, and the mechanism for anyone who wants it.

  4. Label the evidence

Every note says how sure scientists are, so you can tell settled science from a promising idea.
